Condolence & Memory Journal

I was absolutely shocked to hear this news today. Dr. Gemlick has performed several surgeries on my fractured Fibula and damage to my right knee. His upbeat attitude was infectious while recovering and through rehab! After all these years I have never forgotten him and am very sad for his work family and his families loss.

Dr. Gemlick was a great physician. He did two surgeries on my arms and hand. He always had time for a chat and I appreciated his care.

I finally got to meet Dr. Gemlick minutes before he performed my knee surgery on September 19, 2019. I was referred to him by close trusted friends from Trine University. I trusted him immediately. After my checkup on September 30th, I knew the knee was healing just fine, now I know its just my heart that aches for his family and his co-workers Team Gemlick. May God Bless you all.

Dr. Gemlick has been our doctor for almost 20 years and seen both of us through multiple surgeries. He was a super guy to talk to as he always treated you as if you were his only patient of the day, taking time to thoroughly explain and answer questions. The only doctor my husband had total faith in...ever...Our prayers and condolences are with his family during this very sad time. So many wonderful tributes to him is wonderful to see.

One of the best doctors I've EVER had. He was supposed to do my shoulder surgery in april, and it got rescheduled due to me continuing to get sick. The ONLY doctor I trusted to do my surgery. Very compassionate, understanding. And knew how to make someone feel comfortable, and like they were more than just another patient in his book. He actually made you feel more like family, than a patient. My deepest condolences to his family.

I was one of the many standing shoulder to shoulder in the back of the church yesterday. Such an amazing tribute to a really good guy. I knew Brett as a client and a friend. He was one of my all time favorite clients.

I provided some of the medical devices he used in the operating room and I always enjoyed making the trip to Ft Wayne to work with Dr Gemlick. In my 35 years in this field, I've worked with 100s of surgeons, some more talented than others, some easier to work with than others. Most are very good at what they do but a small number, rare men like Brett, are great at what they do. Brett was an amazingly gifted surgeon. In addition to his tremendous skill, he had an unshakeable ability to stay calm when situations got difficult. In his OR, this was a rare occurrence, as he demanded everyone was as committed to his patient as he was but if something ever was going to go wrong, he'd be the guy you'd want to carry the team through. I never saw him rattled.

He was also just a heck of a lot of fun to be around. I'm learning from anybody who has something to say about Brett that my impression of him is not a rare one. I am so grateful to have known Brett, am indebted to him for what he taught me and my prayer for his family is that their joyful memories will somehow help to relieve the pain of this loss. I know I will hold my own memories of him very dear. God bless all of you.

Dr.Gemlick did my knee surgery and my friend's shoulder.
He was so kind and empathetic as a doctor. He listened very well when you were sitting in his office. I remember showing him the progress on my knee and he joked with me and made me feel good about my progress. I pray for his wife and children and ask that God's loving arms hold each close forever. Prayers and love to his One family, colleagues and trusted friends.

Dr.Gemlick was an outstanding surgeon. He was number 1 in my book. One of my former students told me a year ago
that Dr.Gemlick was his inspiration to become an orthopedic surgeon someday. I am totally heartbroken for this absolutely devastating loss to our community. I am so sorry and I pray for his family and children that you will carry your father with you forever in your hearts.

Not much else can be said that hasnt already been said. I was a patient and was hoping for him to replace my knee next year. I am struggling with the loss. I had known him for over 10 years. He was always funny, kind, caring, and thoughtful with everyone he met. I truly miss him. May his co workers, former patients, and his family find peace and comfort in the following months ahead.

My deepest sympathies to Dr Gemlicks family but also to his ONE family too. He was my surgeon three years ago when I tore my hamstring off the bone. He made the comment that he only did one or two of these a year. I then told him he needed to give me a gold medal for doing so. Comfort and peace to his family.

I am a patient of Dr Gemlicks. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his wife and children and also his work family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I am devastated as well. Dr did a shoulder replacement in May of 18 and a knee replacement in Dec of 18 for me. He always had a smile on his face and a bounce in his step. He was just an all round great Dr and person. I will miss seeing him at my appointments. I'm sure there is a special place in heaven for such a special young man. May you rest in peace Dr G

Dr. Gemlick was one of my greatest mentors as a new PA at ONE. Even though I havent worked with him in 9 years now there isnt a day i dont think about him because every shoulder and MRI I look at i can hear his voice teaching me. The loss of him is immeasurable . My thoughts, prayers go out to his wife, kids, his ONE family, and all the patients he has cared for.

I will miss Dr. Gemlick. I had a troublesome knee and he saw me thru 4 surgeries. He was compassionate and understanding with my frustration about that knee and was always encouraging that it would be all right. I was heartsick by the news of his loss. I believe he was a great man and surgeon.

To the family of Dr. Gemlick -

I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Although I did not keep in touch as much as I would have liked to, i realized when I heard the news what an incredible impact Dr. Gemlick had on my life. As a high school student he welcomed me as an intern he let me, then a clueless 16-18 year old, follow him everywhere w him for about three hours each day during my last two years of high school. He taught me about Orthopaedics, he played practical jokes on me, and he treated me like part of the team despite my lack of ANY real understanding of what was happening. He exposed me the the world of orthopaedic surgery and was a rare example of a surgeon who knew the importance of work life balance. Fast forward ten years later and I still remember how much he clearly loved his job and loved his family. I am now completing a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma surgery and I realized yesterday when I heard the news of his passing as I thought about the time I spent w him that he is the reason why Im here. I continue to strive to keep my priorities straight and put my family above everything despite the demands of the profession we both chose. I will continue to remember his example as I go forward.

I wish you all some comfort and peace, though I cant imagine the pain you must be feeling right now. I count myself lucky to have been able to know him even a little bit. Sending all my love to those who were closest to him.
