Carolyn F. ( Fox) Miller, 79, died on Thursday, July 31st at The Towne House Nursing Home, Fort Wayne, IN from complications due to ALS. Carolyn was born August 27, 1934 in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Gould and Rhea Fox. Carolyn loved growing up in Kalamazoo and it was there she developed her lifelong love affair with ballet. She graduated from State High and then attended Northwestern University and the University of Utah before receiving her B.A. from Western Michigan University. She received her M.A. in theater from Northwestern. She married Robert J. Miller in 1961 and in 1966 they moved to Fort Wayne. She worked at St. Joseph Hospital and Jefferson Junior High School before returning to her true love - teaching ballet. Over the years, she did this at The Fort Wayne Ballet, The Northeast School of Dance, and her own studio - The Dancers' Studio. She was kind but firm with her students. She held them to high standards and then reveled in their successes. She was certified by both the Checchetti Council and the Royal Academy of Dance. Carolyn and Bob were both lifelong patrons of the arts. They attended many Philharmonic, theater, dance and other performances in Fort Wayne and elsewhere. They truly enjoyed these times. They were voted co-recipients of the Indiana Theater People of the Year in 2001. In her later years, Carolyn joined the Alley Cats dance group. She garnered tremendous joy from performing on-stage again. She eventually became the director of the Alley Cats and continued in this role until her ALS diagnosis. Carolyn was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, the Pine Valley Country Club, and the Chi Omega sorority. Besides her love of ballet and the other fine arts, Carolyn loved traveling, quilting, knitting, sewing, and the company of her many friends. Above all else, however, she loved her family. Survivors include her children, Stephen (Jessica), Fort Wayne; Alan (Pam), Boise, ID; David, Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Sara, Katie, Brendan and Austin, Boise, ID; Samuel and Mary Grace, Fort Wayne; and special friend, Edward Hook, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Elizabeth Percival. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 3:30 pm, at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 4700 Vance Ave. Visitation will be Friday August 8, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at D.O.
